Shipping Guides
Practical starting points for choosing a freight mode, preparing documents and understanding international delivery scope.
Shipping Guides
Start with the shipment, not the headline rate
Record origin, destination, commodity, quantity, dimensions, weight and timing before comparing offers. If two quotations use different assumptions, the price difference may not represent the same service.

FCL or LCL?
Dedicated container space and shared-container consolidation solve different needs. Compare total origin and destination costs, cargo handling and shipment size.

Air freight or express?
For urgent cargo, compare chargeable weight, parcel dimensions, commodity acceptance and the final delivery scope. A flight duration alone does not describe the complete journey.

Understand DDP, DAP and DDU
| Term | Import responsibilities | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| DDP | The seller handles import clearance and applicable import duties and taxes under the agreed sales term. | Importer arrangement, tax treatment, named delivery point and exclusions. |
| DAP | The buyer handles import clearance and import duties and taxes. | Who acts as importer, customs coordination and final delivery arrangements. |
| DDU | A legacy term still used in some inquiries; it is not one of the Incoterms® 2020 rules. | Translate the intended responsibilities into a current, expressly agreed term rather than relying on the abbreviation. |
For DAP and DDP, delivery is normally ready for unloading at the named place. A freight quote must state its own inclusions. Availability depends on the goods, destination and import arrangements. Read the ICC introduction to Incoterms® 2020.
Shipping Guides
Prepare a useful packing list
Include the number and type of packages, gross and net weights where relevant, dimensions, product descriptions and quantities. Tell the forwarder if cargo is fragile or cannot be stacked.
Shipping Guides
Check the quote inclusions
Review origin handling, main carriage, destination handling, customs-related scope and final delivery. Ask about validity, minimum charges and conditions that could create additional cost.
Shipping Guides
Plan overseas inventory
Connect the transport plan to the date stock must be available. Receiving appointments and warehouse check-in may add steps after international arrival.

Shipping Guides
Prepare commercial documents
Keep the invoice and packing list consistent with the actual goods and consignee. Product-specific documents depend on the cargo and destination; provide clear product information before booking.
Shipping Guides
Make the destination precise
A country name is not a delivery location. Include the city, postal code, street address and type of receiver, together with access or appointment requirements.
Shipping Guides
Use current, shipment-specific information
These guides support initial planning. Rates, schedules, cargo acceptance and import requirements must be checked for the actual shipment. For trade-term definitions, consult the ICC source linked in the delivery-term guide.
